Glashutte Original Limited Edition Senator Observer 1911 - Julius Assman

The German watchmaker Glashuette Original presents a limited edition model Senator Observer 1911 - Julius Assmann. The watch is dedicated to the memory of two outstanding individuals.

One is the father of watchmaking in Glashuette - Julius Assman, whose name is perpetuated in the name of the model. Julius Assmann started his company at the age of 25 and is revered today as one of the founding fathers of watchmaking in Glashuette.

Pocket watches, chronometers and observation watches crafted by Assmann and his employees were to play a significant role in establishing the company’s excellent reputation: the observation watches in particular were known for their remarkable precision and superior craftsmanship.

The second is the polar explorer Roald Amundsen. In 1907, the young Glashuette watchmaker Paul Loewe crafted a watch so accurate that he was urged to send it for testing to the German Naval Observatory in Hamburg, the institute officially responsible for testing and certifying the accuracy of navigational timekeepers made in Germany. It was there that Roald Amundsen saw the watch in 1910 and purchased it for his successful journey to the South Pole.

The watch is encased in a 44mm white gold classic round case.

The case back, engraved with the limited edition number (01/25), has an antireflective sapphire crystal bearing the dates of Amundsen’s arrival at the South Pole and its centennial anniversary: 14 Dec. 1911 – 14 Dec 2011; the name Julius Assmann – Glashuette i/SA, and “Tribute to R. Amundsen”.

The silvergrain dial of the Senator Observer 1911 - Julius Assmann has three carefully applied layers of lacquer. The dial features subsidiary seconds and power reserve displays at 9 and 3 o’clock, respectively.

The dial also features Glashuette Original’s panorama date display at 6 o’clock; and blued and polished sweep minute and pear-shaped hour hands. A milled railroad chapter ring frames the black Arabic numerals.

The watch runs on an automatic calibre 100-14 self-winding movement. Traditional observation watches used hand-wound movements so in this case the ‘Ab Auf’ indicator on the dial represents a true power reserve, rather than a simple indication of running time. The movement can be observed through the sapphire case back.

The watch comes on a suitably retro brown or black calfskin strap. Glashuette Original has created the Senator Observer 1911 – Julius Assmann in a limited edition of 25 pieces.

Beyond cool: Ladoire Black Widow Mr. Ice

Just as most people will never get to drink ice water direct from a melting polar ice cap, most people will never get to wear, let alone own a Ladoire Black Widow Mr. Ice, available, or rather probably not, in a limited edition of 12 pieces.

Like its stylish predecessors Mr. Green and Mr. Race, the Ladoire Mr. Ice is a stimulating example of three dimensional design. To read a Ladoire Black Widow watch, of which this is one in the collection, you have to learn to tell the time all over again. Three offset hands diplay the hours, minutes and seconds, all controlled by the Ladoire Planetary complication, which acts as a futuristic regulator.

The local time can be read on the planetary disks, which are covered in Super Luminova, so the watch is destined to look super suave when on the wrist of the lucky playboy ordering ice cold vodka martinis in the night club.

The watch runs on an in house calibre Calvet 02 automatic winding movement. The second time zone can be read on the crown on the lower left side of the case.

Of one thing you can be certain. Not a single Mr. Ice will be put on ice. They are one of the hottest horological properties of the year. Asking price is $71,000 but mere cash alone is unlikely to buy you one.

Drive for excellence: Edox Dakar Limited Edition watch

Swiss Jura-based watchmaker Edox has a history strewn with triumphs and records (some never equalled to this day) and is adding a string to its bow as the exclusive timekeeper of the Dakar Rally Raid for the next three years.

Founded in 1979 by Frenchman Thierry Sabine, the Dakar Rally Raid is incontestably the world’s number one car race and human adventure, every year attracting over 600 participants in the car, truck or motorcycle categories. It was initially staged on the African continent and relocated in 2009 to South America, its route crossing Argentina, Chile and Peru.

For over thirty years the Dakar Rally has lived up to its motto. “A challenge for those who go. A dream for those who stay behind”.

The new Edox Limited Edition Dakar watch possesses the brand’s much-prized values: strength, technical excellence, and a constant drive for perfection.

The tough 316L stainless steel timepiece has been built to withstand extremes of temperature, impact, sand and harsh weather. A black carbon fiber dial with contracting bright luminous white hands and indices provides perfect visibility under the most adverse conditions. This rugged timepiece is powered by an Edox 64 quartz movement, which is based on the top-of-the line Ronda 6004B. With its solid 42 mm diameter, the quartz movement is robust, made to withstand extremes of temperature, impacts, sand and earth.

The dial faithfully depicts the route of the South American tour. The black back offers perfect visibility, and beautifully sets off the white detail of the dial.

The “Dakar” is a 500-piece limited edition, each piece supplied in an exclusive presentation box. Every watch is individually numbered on a plate affixed to the side of the watch. It will retail for US$2,050.

Not so expendable: Panerai PAM00382

At the start of the year Officine Panerai released two new Luminor Submersible Watches at SIHH 2011. The Submersible is Panerai's divers watch which incorporates the rotating bezel first used in the Blancpain Fifthy Fathoms. This became one of the standard designs for divers watches.

Now the watch has been adopted by the stars of Expendables 2, the follow up to the hit movie The Expendables.

The second outing ropes in a group of ageing Hollywood dependables including Sylvester Stallone, who did much to champion Panerai and make it hugely popular, Bruce Willis, Dolph Lundgren, Jason Statham, and Old Spice commercial star Terry Crews.

Just in case you felt you didn’t get your money’s worth in The Expendables, Expendables 2 sees the return of Arnold Schwarzenegger to high action movies, and Jean Claude Van Damme has high kicked his way into the movie too.

Panerai Luminor Submersible 1950 3 Days Automatic Bronzo PAM00382

As for the watch, the dial follows the usual design for a Submersible with bar markers applied in place of the figures 12 and 6. Luminous skeleton hands are used instead of the typical Paneria hands. These are all designed to aid legibility in low light conditions. Being true diver watches, a Submersible watch is rated to be water resistant to at least 300 metres.

The PAM 382 47mm features the in-house Panerai  P.9000 calibre, a self winding movement that displays the time and date, and beats at a steady 28,600 vibrations per hour, with a three day power reserve.

Unusually the watch is made from bronze. The bronze chosen by Officine Panerai for the Luminor Submersible is CuSn8, an alloy of copper and pure tin extremely resistant to corrosive action by sea water and the effect of it in the atmosphere. Because of its corrosion resistance, bronze was especially suitable for use in boat and ship fittings prior to the wide employment of stainless steel.

Meanwhile filming for Expendables 2 is taking place in Sofia Bulgaria, where no doubt all of the cast are hoping to scoop more box office gold.

We are indebted to T.Lex of Oceanic Time for bringing this story to our attention.

Christiaan van der Klaauw Aquarius Planetarium

Where astronomy and astrology meet
Master Dutch watchmaker Christiaan van der Klaauw specialises solely in the design and manufacture of astronomical watches and now presents what will be the first piece in a series of twelve unique watches: The Aquarius Planetarium. It is based on Christiaan van der Klaauw’s famous Planetarium watch, featuring the world’s first and smallest mechanical planetarium, showing the cycles around the Sun of the planets Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn.

The solid gold dial shows one of the twelve constellations, in this case Aquarius, and is engraved by master-engraver Kees Engelbarts.

The case is made of platinum and measures 40mm in diameter. It’s fitted with a sapphire crystal on both sides. Only one watch will be made of each zodiac sign, ensuring total exclusivity.

Every watch will be a ‘pièce unique’ and a collector’s item by its very nature. The other zodiac signs will only be made by special order.

The watch runs on the CK 1196 calibre movement, which is a modified self-winding movement, with an in-house Planetarium module.

The back of the watch reveals a fine rotor, based on the theme of the Planetarium, in which the planets of our solar system are visible.

The rotor is made of 18-carat gold and hand-engraved by Jochen Benzinger. The Aquarius Planetarium and versions showing other zodiac signs, will be available for €79,500 (including taxes).

The Christiaan van der Klaauw website, have created a flash animation that shows exactly how the planets of the planetarium orbit around the sun.

About Christiaan van der Klaauw

Christiaan van der Klaauw started designing and making exclusive hand-made astronomical timepieces in the early ‘70s. He received his education at the instrument-maker school founded in 1901 by Nobel Physics prize winner Professor Heike Kamerlingh Onnes.

It was at this school that helium gas was liquefied for the first time in 1908. Some contemporaries who worked for the same laboratory included Albert Einstein, Niels Bohr, H. Lorentz and W. Röntgen.

During his education, Christiaan served his apprenticeship with the oldest observatory in the world, founded in 1633. The world-famous astronomer Professor J.H. Oort (who discovered the Planetoid belt named after him) was attached to this observatory.

During his apprenticeship, Christiaan became increasingly interested in everything connected with astronomy, which showed later on in the production of his Frisian clocks, table clocks and, eventually, his watches.

Louis Vuitton Tambour Minute Repeater

It may surprise some to know that Louis Vuitton considers the Philippines as one of its principal markets. In a country where almost 90% of the population live on less than $2 a day, the super rich 0.1% love to indulge in the latest creations from this upmarket French malletier.

In contrast with many markets that are feeling the pinch and foregoing luxury goods, Manila's Greenbelt Makati store was recently extended and lavishly upgraded to cater to celebrities and VIPs who love to call in regularly to see what’s new and go home with an item or two.

One of the items that has caught the imagination of the well heeled of late is the new Louis Vuitton Tambour Minute Repeater. It’s clear that with the addition of this new ultra high-end model, Louis Vuitton is getting serious about developing and delivering haute horology watches in addition to its extensive range of top of the line luggage and luxury accessories.

This is the first independently designed and developed high complication model from LV produced in partnership with La Fabrique du Temps. The watch incorporates the highly complex minute repeater function together with a useful mode for contemporary globetrotters.

Visible through both the smoked sapphire glass dial and the transparent caseback is the manual-wind LV 178 calibre, which chimes the wearer’s home time and features a 100-hour power reserve. The dial displays both the ‘home’ and ‘away’ time zone at a glance.

The watch is available in white, rose or yellow gold. The 44 mm case of the Tambour Minute Repeater is water-resistant to thirty metres.

As with many Louis Vuitton, products  the watch can be customised upon request, with  options such as initials, a family crest or an element in relief, replacing the number 4 under the glass dial. The timepiece is presented on a black alligator strap.

LV CEO Hamdi Chatti says collectors can expect several all-new movements in 2012.

View the lavish promotional video to introduce the watch. Isn't it nice to have money!

Nice moves: Jules Audemars Extra-Thin Limited Edition Bolshoi

Following six-year years of renovation, the world renowned Russian temple of dance and opera, the Bolshoi, has reopened its doors for the 236th season in its history with a performance of Sleeping Beauty.

The role of Sleeping Beauty was performed by top Russian ballet dancer and Audemars Piguet ambassadress Svetlana Zakharova. She dazzled some 1,700 privileged spectators who attended the show on Sunday, November 20th.

To celebrate the reopening of the Bolshoi Theatre, the Audemars Piguet has raised the curtain on an Extra-Thin Jules Audemars series limited edition watch featuring an open-worked oscillator engraved with the facade of the famous building.

The Bolshoi Theatre

Six years ago, the Bolshoi Theatre, once the epitome of Russian culture, was threatened with closure. Fortunately the decision was made to give this legendary venue back its sparkle.

More than 3,000 workmen and artisans worked on the site to effectively double the size of the theatre, as well as equipping it with ultra modern equipment. The Bolshoi today looks like it did in 1856 when it was renovated following a fire.

No detail was overlooked, from the gold leaf covered stucco to the gold leaf framing of mirrors, to the stage curtains and those in the Tsar’s box, entirely hand-stitched with gold thread. A magnificent achievement.

Jules Audemars Bolshoi series

The special Jules Audemars “Bolshoi” series comes in pink or white gold with an elegant anthracite dial. Regarded by connoisseurs as one of the most beautiful self-winding movements, the watch is powered by calibre 2120.

Its sapphire case-back is barely 2.45 mm thick. Inside, the open-worked oscillator of the 2120 calibre has been decorated with the famous theatre facade.

The watch will be available in a limited edition of  99 pieces (50 in pink gold and 49 in white gold). The number represents the time gap between the creation of the two Houses; the Bolshoi theatre, founded in 1776 and Audemars Piguet, founded in 1875.

Hublot Big Bang 'Aero Bang Niemayer'

Not a moment too soon, Hublot, Official Timekeeper of the forthcoming 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil™, is starting its countdown to the event by celebrating the country's capital, Brasilia, and paying tribute to its creator, Oscar Niemeyer.

Architect of the futuristic city, and symbol of modern Brazil, Oscar Niemeyer planned and designed Brasilia from the ground up and is one of his country's most celebrated figures.

He is also recognised as one of the most well-known architects of the 20th century, and has agreed to work with Hublot.

In his honour, and to celebrate his 104th birthday at the end of 2011, a special series named "Aero Bang Niemeyer" will be created, limited to just 104 pieces.

Recently Rick Delacroix, President of Hublot Latin America, presented Oscar Niemayer with the watch that bears his name, engraved with the number 104/104.

Created from tantalum, the Big Bang "Aero Bang Niemeyer" comprises a matt black skeleton dial which allows the beautiful "architecture" of the Chronograph calibre HUB4214 to be fully appreciated.

The yellow and green colours subtly applied to the indexes and hands are a clear reference to the colours of Brasilia. The 104 numbered pieces will of course be available in Brazil, exclusively from Griffith in Brasilia.

Oscar Niemayer

Born in 1907 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Oscar Niemeyer is one of the most famous architects in the world, and his creations form a major part of the heart of Brasilia, as well as the cities of Rio and Sào Paulo. Responsible for the realisation of more than 600 projects, the architect has also left his stamp on a large number of European countries and the United States, most significantly through his work on the construction of the UN headquarters.

A great lover of freedom, he is regarded as one of the great symbols of contemporary architecture.

Volvo Ocean Race: Groupama 4 take 3rd place in first leg

Alicante, 5 November: the starting signal was given at 2 pm local time. Sporting his JeanRichard Diverscope, Groupama 4 skipper Franck Cammas and his teammates set off on the first leg of the race, heading for Cape Town in South Africa.

We first reported on Franck Cammas and his sponsorship by JeanRichard back in June of this year, when they were busy making preparations for the race.

The evening before the race, JeanRichard General Manager Massimo Macaluso and Groupama CEO Jean-Luc Baucherel paid a visit to show their support and encouragement for the skipper and his team as they undertake what is undoubtedly a major sporting challenge: over 8 months and 9 legs, the 6 race teams will cover more than 39,270 miles across 4 oceans.

Physical and mental preparation

Franck Cammas and his teammates have trained hard in preparation for the event, first on the ocean against the other teams in the Fastnet race last August, and also in the mountains, conquering the summits of the Alps - a surefire way to strengthen team spirit. It takes an unbreakable team spirit to set out in a precarious monohull and race for long periods against the cream of international talent.

Following the race

Fans can follow the race and the position of the teams at .

JeanRichard, the official timekeeper for Franck Cammas, will display the countdown between each audio and visual conversation between race headquarters and the team. Groupama Sailing Team is the only team to have set up this brand new, unique link for 9 months. The sessions are scheduled for 12:30 on Tuesdays and Thursdays at Groupama’s race HQ, located at 21, Boulevard Malesherbes in the 8th arrondissement of Paris.

“The JeanRichard Manufacture is very proud to be associated with this great skipper, a worthy and respectful successor to Eric Tabarly, who set out on this extraordinary human adventure in 1993”.
Massimo Macaluso

“This 8-month Everest of an offshore race is a challenge I wanted to take on with the support of the JeanRichard Manufacture. See you in Galway for the final watch test results.
Franck Cammas

Race update

On November 29th, Groupama 4 took 3rd place in the first leg of the Volvo Ocean Race by arriving at Cape Town behind Team Telefonica in first and Camper in second.  But of course there’s still a long way to go.

20 years in China: Ermengildo Zegna Rattrapante & Foudroyante

This superb 20 piece limited edition watch designed by Girard-Perregaux has been launched in China to support top men’s Italian fashion house Ermengildo Zegna.

As the name strongly suggests, the watch features a rattrapante (split-seconds function) and a foudroyante (measurement to 1/8 of second).

The reason for the release of the watch in the Chinese market is to celebrate 20 years of Ermengildo Zegna’s presence there.

The watch is a 40mm piece in a rose gold case. It features an automatic mechanical Girard-Perregaux GP04C0 movement and comes on an alligator strap.

The timepiece is part of a special series of Ermengildo Zegna branded/co-branded luxury items created to celebrate the 20th year of Ermengildo Zegna in China — there is also a Zegna/Vertu phone, Zegna/Tateoissian cufflinks, and specially created Zegna fabrics, so dedicated and well heeled customers can indulge in the full 20th anniversary set.

Ermengildo Zegna is a Milan based men's fashion empire founded in 1910. It is now managed by the fourth generation of the Zegna family and remains in family ownership. The company has a much sought after range of suits, shirts, knitwear and accessories.

Giles Kristian is new GRAHAM Brand Ambassador

Giles Kristian may look like he’s just two minutes out of uni, but this young author, described as prolific, fearless and generous, is already riding high in the bestseller charts with Raven, an epic trilogy threatening to become a series of Hollywood blockbusters.

GRAHAM Watches have now snapped him up to become a new Brand Ambassador, an unusual move considering writers tend to do little more than loaf about and write about adventure rather than get into the thick of it.

Raven Trilogy

Random House described Giles as ‘one of the most exciting authors of our generation’. He broke into the literary scene in 2009 with his debut novel, Raven Blood Eye, a Viking actioner about a young man’s coming of age amongst a band of Viking warriors. It was published to critical acclaim and became a bestseller.

He followed this up with two further novels:  Sons of Thunder and Odin’s Wolves, and the books have so far been published in five languages, including, presumably, Old Norse.

Recently, Random House USA has acquired the RAVEN series and will publish the trilogy in America next year – and that’s when you could get the likes of Peter Jackson sniffing around to direct the trilogy.

The Bleeding Land

Spring 2012 will see the release of Kristian’s fourth novel, The Bleeding Land; the start of a major new series and is likely to further establish Giles Kristian as a leading force in adventure fiction.

During the 90s Giles was lead singer of pop group Upside Down (never heard of ‘em), and was  achieving four top twenty hit records, performing twice on Top of the Pops, and singing at the Royal Albert Hall, N.E.C. and Wembley Arena.

During his time as a singer he toured for two years in Europe and made music videos all over the world, from Prague, Miami, Mexico, the Swiss Alps, and of course Bognor Regis.

Giles has worked as a model, appearing in press campaigns and TV commercials and has also worked as an advertising copywriter. He lived in New York for the best part of three years where he wrote copy for movie marketing company Empire Design.

It’s good to see GRAHAM pick a writer, now we can look forward to moody action shots of Giles spell checking on Word.

 Graham Chronofighter Oversize Deep Black

Giles’ watch of choice from the GRAHAM collection is the new GRAHAM Chronofighter. It was inspired by the English fighting forces, and although it is called a Diver, it was originally designed for combat pilots, wearing gloves. That is the reason for the massive left-handed fast-action start/stop lever. The 47mm case is stainless steel with a PVD carbide treatment. The dial is black (described as deep black) and the caseback is solid, with the royal marine crown emblem. The movement is automatic mechanical G1732. The watch is a diver watch, even though it was originally intended for use by pilots, and has a water-resistance of 1000 metres. It is currently available for a retail price of $11,000 USD.

Teeing off: Omega Seamaster Aqua Terra ‘Golf’

Just in case the game wasn’t popular enough, Omega has renewed its commitment to helping grow the game of golf around the world.

To celebrate it they have launched the Seamaster Aqua Terra “Golf”, with distinctive green markings on the dial. The watch, which features a 41.50 mm brushed and polished stainless steel case and a polished bezel, has a black dial with the vertical lines that define Omega’s popular Aqua Terra Collection.

The indexes are crafted from brushed and polished 18 Ct white gold and there is a date window at 3 o'clock.

The "Seamaster" name is also in green as are the numbers on the minute track (60, 5, 10, 15, etc.), The verdant colour choice reflects the symbolism of golfing greens around the globe. Even the central seconds hand is distinguished by a green tip.

Omega co-axial calibre 8500

The Seamaster Aqua Terra “Golf” is powered by the Omega Co-Axial calibre 8500, the movement that, when it was introduced in 2007, signalled a revolution in mechanical watchmaking.

Equipped with the first practical new watch escapement to be introduced in some 250 years, the invention of the late English watchmaker George Daniels, the Co-Axial movement delivers outstanding chronometric performance which maintains its accuracy over a longer period of time than those with a traditional Swiss lever escapement.

No service intervals

As a result there are longer service intervals and Omega guarantees the timepiece for four years. The hour hand can be changed independently of the minute and seconds hands allowing travellers to adjust the time easily when they change time zones.

The Seamaster Aqua Terra “Golf” wristwatch features Omega's patented screw and pin stainless steel bracelet and is water resistant to 15 bar / 150 metres / 500 feet.

Golf joke

OK, this has nothing to do with the launch of the Omega Seamaster Aqua Terra ‘Golf’ but it is nonetheless an amusing golf joke worthy of passing on.

Arthur is 90 years old. He's played golf every day since his retirement 25 years ago.

One day he arrives home downcast.

"That's it," he tells his wife. "I'm giving up golf. My eyesight has got so bad. Once I've hit the ball, I can't see where it has gone."

His wife sympathises. As they sit down, she has a suggestion: "Why don't you take my brother with you and give it one more try."

"That's no good," sighs Arthur. "Your brother is 103.  He can't help."

"He may be very old," says the wife, "but his eyesight is perfect."

So the next day, Arthur heads off to the golf course with his brother-in-law. He tees up, takes an almighty swing and squints down the fairway. He turns to the brother-in-law. "Did you watch the ball?"

"Of course I did!" says the brother-in-law. "I have perfect eyesight."

"Where did it go?" asks Arthur.

 "Can't remember."
