Who dares wins: Christophe Claret 21 Blackjack

Clearly casino inspired high-end watches are becoming the ‘must have’ new toy among the world’s high rolling playboys this season. Hot on the heels of Roger Dubuis’ Chronograph La Monégasque Big Number, inspired by the design of a roulette wheel, we have Christophe Claret’s tribute to Blackjack aptly named 21 Blackjack.

The 21 Blackjack watch takes the casino and gambling theme a great deal further with an incredibly intricate calibre BLJ08 movement with 501 parts, 40 jewels, 7 double ceramic ball-bearing mechanisms, and twin barrels providing a 72-hour power reserve.

At its heart the 21 Blackjack features traditional hours and minutes but in truth the watch mechanism is only a prelude for the high stakes games to come.

There are three mechanically-animated gambling games for you to bet on with your pals: Blackjack which features a striking mechanism, roulette, and a dice game. The dial has 5 windows, two of which are for the bank placed at 10-o-clock on the dial. And three further windows for the player, which are activated by a push-button at 8-o-clock. The hours and minutes are displayed by hands with synthetic ruby crystal.

You’ll certainly be noticed wearing this watch, because it’s a large 45mm and comes in an embarrassment of riches: grey titanium, black PVD-treated titanium, black PVD-treated titanium, 18K white gold, or 18K pink gold. And you’ll also be heard because all versions feature side windows next to the crown which reveal the striking hammer with its gong, and the other two dice. The back of the watch offers roulette in 3D rotating in step with the watch movement.

Acquiring these incredibly complicated watches will be very much a game of chance too, because there will only be – what else - 21 of each version produced. Depending on your choice of precious metal the price is likely to be around US$177,000 to US$210,000.

The Christophe Claret 21 Blackjack will be on show at Baselworld 2011 next month.
