Out of the blue: F.P. Journe Chronomètre Bleu

The F.P. Journe Chronomètre Bleu was released in December 2009 by the high-end watch manufacture based in Switzerland entirely designed and created by the eponymous 54 year old company owner François-Paul Journe.

The brand’s Latin motto ‘Invenit et Fecit’ ("I invented it, and I made it") explains how the company manufactures all of their watches in house from start to finish. Journe often designs brand new movements, even inventing completely new systems, like the resonance chronometer.

The distinctive blue anthracite colour of the case can be attributed to tantalum, a rare dark grey metal said to be very tough to work with because of its extremely high fusion temperature at over 3000° and a density of 16.3.

However tantalum is highly resistant to corrosion and wear and is often used in dental and surgical instruments and implants, as it causes no immune response. The manual winding movement of the Chronomètre Bleu is made in 18K rose gold, and like that of all F.P.Journe creations it is signed with the motto ‘Invenit et Fecit’.

Each F.P.Journe movement guarantees a calibre invented, constructed, and assembled entirely in-house. The movement oscillates at 21,600 v/ph and has a 56 hour power reserve. Its baseplate and bridges are carved from 18k rose gold and are decorated with Geneva stripes and perlage.

The movement is dynamically adjusted to six positions making it a true chronometer. At 39mm, the Chronomètre Bleu is definitely not one of the largest watches out there, and that, combined with its slimness will make it a watch suitable for a smaller wrist. – F.P. Journe suggests it as suitable gift for going back to college, and you can guarantee it’s a couple of semester’s worth of fees.
