Chance of a lifetime: Young watchmakers to design for A. Lange & Sohne

Eight International Young Watchmakers have been given a fantastic opportunity to work closely with leading German watch manufacture F. A. Lange & Sohne as part of their Excellence Award.

The task for the young participants for this year’s Excellence Award is to discover the art of fine watchmaking. The eight participants, from Austria, Denmark, Germany, the Netherlands, Sweden and the USA are competing for 10,000 euros in prize money.

Their mission (and they have chosen to accept it) is to construct a date display watch on the basis of an ETA 6498 movement. A. Lange & Söhne is sponsoring the award scheme for the third time in a row.

From 16 to 20 July 2012, the participants used the opportunity to glean insights into the intricate art of fine watchmaking. Attending several workshops, the students learned details about finishing techniques including flat polish, perlage and engraving and the Lange way of assembling a movement.

To experience the art of fine watchmaking, they engraved a balance cock and assembled a Lange calibre.

Martin Schetter, chief product designer at A. Lange & Söhne supervised the group and explained the philosophy of Lange design.

The prospective watchmakers have until November 9th 2012 to work on and perfect their designs and enter them into the competition. A jury of watch experts will examine and judge their craftsmanship.

Criteria for judging includes originality of idea, functionality, technical quality and craftsmanship as well as good artistic realisation.

The winner of the competition will be announced on December 6th 2012. The prize money is to be earmarked to support their future watchmaking endeavours.
